Portuguese citizen accused of murder is extradited to the United Kingdom

The detainee also faces charges of vandalism, damage, looting and hooliganism. Extradition was only possible through guarantees of review of the sentence, since Portugal does not allow extraditions to countries where the detainee could be sentenced to more than 25 years in prison.

A Portuguese citizen wanted by the United Kingdom for murder and detained in Nazaré by the Judiciary Police (PJ) on January 13th has now been extradited to that country,

According to a note from the Judiciary sent to Lusa, the facts occurred on December 3, 2024in the city of Manchester, with the Portuguese accused of completed murder and also crimes of vandalism, damage, looting and hooliganism.

The PJ adds that, “in the abstract” [com base na lei inglesa] o detained “incurs two life sentences for the murder and a five-year sentence for the violent conduct”.

Because Portugal does not allow extradition to countries where the detainee can be sentenced to a sentence of more than 25 years (the maximum allowed in the country) or the death penalty, the PJ explained to Lusa that, “although the UK legal system provides for life imprisonment for the crimes in question, extradition was only possible through guarantees within the scope of international criminal cooperation, ensuring that the extradited person has the possibility of reviewing their sentence”.

O Portuguese citizen has until now been in the Prison Establishment attached to the Lisbon PJwhere he entered on January 14th, after appearing before the Coimbra Court of Appeal, which ordered his handover to the British authorities, which has now been completed.
