UK opens investigation against Musk’s X for ‘deepfakes’ and sexual images

The British data protection regulator, Information Commissioner’s Office, announced on Tuesday (3) that it has opened an investigation against the X network for creating sexual images and deepfakes with the help of Grok Artificial Intelligence.

The measure comes after reports that the platform’s AI had been used to generate sexual images without people’s consent and even about minors, which constitutes child pornography.

In an official statement, the British body highlighted that the concerns relate to the lack of adequate safeguards on the platform to protect users’ personal data.

In addition to Musk, authorities also subpoenaed Linda Yaccarinom, the company’s former CEO, to appear at a hearing on April 20, where both are expected to be questioned about suspected abuse of algorithms and the creation of tools that enable deepfakes, such as the use of Grok Artificial Intelligence.

In July, Musk had already denied the accusations and labeled the French operation “a politically motivated criminal investigation”.

The investigation carried out by the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office investigates the platform’s alleged “complicity” in the dissemination of pornographic images of minors, sexually explicit deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity and manipulation in data processing.
