No AlgarveAndré Ventura announced that he will propose the postponement of the second round of scheduled for Sunday, taking into account the destruction caused by last week’s storms.
“The last concern is votes,” said the presidential candidate, who was addressing journalists and mayors, adding that the population is unable to interact with the community and without access to essential goods.
Ventura has been touring the areas most affected by storms Kristin and Leonardo, in a week of the presidential campaign. He says that, on the ground, he has noticed that “people are having a bad time”.
Therefore, he considers that it is not “unfair or disproportionate” to ask for the postponement of the election, remembering that a large part of the country is in a state of calamity.
“We are unable to have elections scheduled or contested in this context”, he concludes.
The Electoral Law which regulates the election of the President of the Republic (Decree-Law no. 319-A/76) provides for postponement only in specific polling stations, not at national level. In fact, the impossibility of holding the elections is declared by the mayor, who will have to justify the postponement of the vote.
