What the population, politicians and companies in this country have been waiting for for years has now happened: inflation has weakened significantly. In January, prices were on average only two percent higher than those in January 2025, as Statistics Austria announced in its flash estimate on Wednesday. In December the increase in consumer prices was 3.8 percent. The decisive factor for the lower inflation compared to the previous year is the end of the so-called base effect for electricity and declines in energy prices in general.
