The president should receive the president of the Senate next week, say allies. The meeting is organized so that the heads of the Executive and Legislative branches discuss two points in particular: the appointment of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) and the veto of the dosimetry project.
The meeting has not yet been confirmed, but is scheduled to take place between Monday (9) and Tuesday (10). Lula and Alcolumbre met at the end of last year, when they became closer after a dispute over the Senate. The President of the Senate had a clear preference for a nomination from his predecessor, Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), for the vacancy on the Supreme Court.
After smoothing the edges and forwarding the approval of Messias, Lula and Alcolumbre want to define the script for the next session of Congress, but the uncertainty regarding and the possibility of opening a Mixed CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) on the Banco Master case have held back this agenda.
In the case of dosimetry, the mood in the Legislature is for the veto to be overturned. The project was an alternative to the proposed amnesty for those involved with January 8th. According to the approved text, instead of a pardon, those convicted of the coup plot, including former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), would have their sentences reduced.
Government leaders believe they will be able to maintain President Lula’s veto on the project. Chiefs from the center and the opposition already believe that the climate is for the overthrow. It is expected that Alcolumbre will give the PT member the temperature and indicate ways to deal with the situation.
In parallel, the opposition demands that the president of the Senate read the CPMI request led by Bolsonaro deputy Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ). According to the regulations, the president of Congress is obliged to read the request for this type of commission of inquiry at the next joint session of the Chamber and Senate, if there is the necessary number of signatures, which is 1/3 of the deputies and senators.
The government publicly states that it will not interfere in the opening of CPIs. But the PT has been working to get votes for another CPMI request, articulated by PSol and Rede. This, the government base believes, has an objective with a broader focus, without placing a target on the Planalto.
LULA AND DEPUTIES
While trying to increase his rapport with Alcolumbre, Lula receives this Wednesday (4) the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB). As shown by Sheetthe PT member and the deputy should get even closer in 2026.
The dinner, at Granja do Torto, will also bring together leaders from the government base and the center. Lula is expected to forward the government’s priority projects with parliamentarians, such as the end of the 6×1 scale and the PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) for Public Security.
