Sines ends year in decline, Portimão reinforces investment in cruises

The Port of Sines ended the year 2025 with a total movement of 42.1 million tons, registering a decrease of 12% compared to the previous year, revealed the port administration.

In a statement, the entity explains that this result was influenced by several factors, namely the adverse atmospheric conditions recorded in the winter months of 2025, which led to “an atypical scenario in Sines of impossibility or extreme constraints in the operation of ships for 26 days”.

Operating conditions and granéis líqugone

In the liquid bulk segment, it was also affected by the technical shutdown of the Galp Refinery in the last quarter of the year, a situation that led to a decrease of around three million tons compared to 2024, with a total volume handled at the Liquid Bulk Terminal of close to 18 million tons.

Despite this context, the administration emphasizes that “the year 2026 offers good prospects in this segment”, with the requalification of the terminal being underway to adapt it to the movement of new green fuels, which will allow the operational capacity of the infrastructure to be increased.

Still in liquid bulk, the resilience of the Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal stands out, which, despite heavy rainfall in 2025, recorded movement levels similar to those of the previous year, guaranteeing “the supply of 96% of the country’s needs”.

Containers and regional performance

In terms of containerized cargo, Terminal XXI handled 1.7 million TEU, corresponding to a 10% decrease compared to 2024, a result associated, according to the Port of Sines, with some labor instability observed throughout 2025, which was resolved at the end of the year.

In this segment, the administration highlights the 4% growth in import and export cargo, reinforcing traffic with the hinterland and the port’s competitiveness among Iberian importers and exporters.

Finally, “the excellent performance of the Port of Portimão, in the cruise segment”, is highlighted, with 56 calls and 23,996 passengers, which represents growth of 40% and 70%, respectively, compared to the previous year. These results reinforce Portimão’s positioning “in relation to Mediterranean traffic”, promoting the Algarve as a reference destination in the cruise market.
