The natural function of psilocybin poses new mysteries


A small medical boom has emerged over the past two decades around psilocybin, the hallucinogen contained in “magic mushrooms”. Numerous clinical studies are investigating its possible therapeutic purposes, particularly in mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. The reason behind this is that when the active ingredient is consumed orally, it is metabolized into psilocin, which binds to certain serotonin receptors in our brain.
