The passage of Depression Kristin caused significant damage in several areas of the country, including José Cid’s house, located in Mogofores, in the municipality of Anadia. The property was partially destroyed after a century-old pine tree fell on the house in the early hours of January 28th, without the musician realizing what had happened at the time.
According to the newspaper Expresso, the strong winds recorded during the storm led to the fall of the tree, which was planted on the property’s land, directly hitting a chapel inside the house. The damage was only assessed hours later, when the day was clear.
Night without alarm signals
José Cid explained that he was asleep at the time everything happened. “Gabriela and I were sleeping. The one who was nearby was my daughter, in the next room”, reported the musician, in statements made live on SIC’s Casa Feliz program.
Not even the proximity of the impact was enough to wake up the house’s occupants. “We live on the other side of the house. Not even my daughter, who was 10 meters away from the accident, heard it. We are very heavy sleepers”, said the artist on the same television program.
The tree that fell had a symbolic value for José Cid. According to , the pine was around 100 years old and was planted by the musician’s father, forming part of the family history associated with the house. “I’m sad. Gabriela’s daughter got married a month ago in this house. And this pine tree was planted by my father, it was 100 years old”, said José Cid, highlighting the emotional impact caused by what happened.
The musician said that he only realized the extent of the damage when he saw images of the place. “I’m seeing the damage now on television, it’s impressive,” he said, quoted by Expresso.
According to the newspaper, the violence of the wind was enough to cause structural damage to the house, although no injuries were reported, either among residents or in the neighborhood.
Next steps after the storm
José Cid said that he will now proceed with the removal of what remains of the fallen tree. The wood will be distributed to the local population as a form of support during the winter. “I’m going to give firewood to the local population to keep warm,” he said.
The musician also confirmed that he will activate his home insurance, ending the episode on a personal note. “This is a house that I usually say, as a joke, that it fell on me, by inheritance. Now it was the pine tree that fell on the house”, he concluded.
