Norway is rocked by an unprecedented corruption scandal centered on the former prime minister and long-time secretary general of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland. Authorities on Thursday confirmed the opening of a criminal prosecution on suspicion of “serious corruption” in connection with Jagland’s close ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Norwegian police announced Thursday that they have opened an investigation into suspected “serious corruption” against former Prime Minister Thorbjörn Jagland over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. TASR writes about it based on a report by the AFP agency.
Jagland was Prime Minister of Norway from 1996 to 1997 and later Secretary General of the Council of Europe from 2009 to 2019. From January 2009 to March 2015, he also chaired the committee that selects the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Police “have opened an investigation targeting … Thorbjörn Jagland on suspicion of serious corruption,” Norway’s national economic and environmental crime investigation body said.
