Releasing Bolsonaro would demoralize the STF, says Lula in an interview in Bahia

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Friday (6) that overturning the veto on the dosimetry project would be a demoralization of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which tried and condemned people for the coup acts of January 8, 2023. Without directly mentioning former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), one of the beneficiaries of the project, Lula said that an amnesty should be made after years.

“This citizen has to stay in prison. Then one fine day, there might be an amnesty for him, like there was in 1964, ten or 15 years later. You can’t play at trying to judge. If you release him, you demoralize the seriousness of the Supreme Court that condemned him”, he declared during an interview with the program “Alô, Juca”, on TV Aratu. Lula has a schedule in Bahia this Friday.

Lula also said he had done his part and that an eventual overturning of the veto would be “a problem for Congress”. “It’s the problem of the National Congress. I did my part. Congress made the law, approved it. I know the conditions that were discussed. I did my part, I vetoed it because I don’t agree. This citizen has to be arrested”, he said.

Still without mentioning Bolsonaro directly, the PT member compared the former president to a “mad dog”: “Do you think that if you have a mad dog in prison and you release him, he will be more tame? This citizen tried to destroy Brazilian democracy. This citizen, who was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison, had a plan to kill Lula, Alckmin and Alexandre Moraes”, added the president.
