Trump administration says its goal is to reduce illicit exports of Iranian oil

Iran and the United States began talks in Oman on February 6, with Washington refusing to rule out military action against the Islamic republic over its deadly crackdown on mass protests.

The United States announced, this Friday (6), new sanctions to restrict Iran’s oil exports, including the imposing sanctions on 14 shipsmoments after the two countries ended a day of indirect negotiations in Oman.

O is “committed to reducing the Iranian regime’s illicit exports of oil and petrochemicals as part of the administration’s maximum pressure campaign,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement.

Although Washington wants to address issues such as Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for armed groups in the region, Tehran only accepts discussing its nuclear program.

After the meeting, Chancellor Araghchi said that the talks “focus exclusively on the nuclear issue”. “We will not discuss any other issues with the Americans,” he told the official IRNA news agency.

The minister also expressed the desire that Washington refrain from “threats and pressure” so that “talks can continue”.
