An avalanche in the High Tatras claimed the lives of two people on Friday morning. The Regional Headquarters of the Police Force (KR PZ) in Prešov informed about it on the social network, saying that the tragedy happened shortly after 11:00 a.m. in the area of the Zlomiskova dolina below the peak of Tupá. According to the police, two men did not survive the avalanche. She confirmed that they were foreigners.
“The police are intensively dealing with the case. Due to the situation, it is not possible to provide more information,” added KR PZ. The police later clarified that it was a pair of Hungarians aged 37 and 38.
The Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) added that they were asked for help through the emergency call operation center. The avalanche broke away after being loaded by climbers in the northwest wall of Tupaj. “Two people were swept away by the avalanche and fell approximately 400 meters in mixed terrain. Subsequently, they remained completely buried. However, they had avalanche equipment and before the arrival of the mountain rescuers, a group of climbers present in the valley started with the so-called friendly help,” said the HZS.

Mountain rescuers requested the cooperation of the Helicopter Rescue and Medical Service, which, however, was unable to take off due to unfavorable conditions. Therefore, the rescuers from the Regional Center of the High Tatras HZS headed to the site of the avalanche accident by land. Witnesses of the fall of the avalanche under the Tupej massif, who were searching the avalanche site, managed to locate both buried persons and free them from the avalanche deposit. However, the elder of the Hungarians suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of falling in an avalanche.
“His co-climber did not have basic vital functions present, so the finders started CPR by the layman, controlled by telephone in cooperation with the emergency line 155. Unfortunately, despite the great efforts of all involved, the man could not be saved,” mountain rescuers added. Members of the HZS transported the remains of the Hungarian climbers to Starý Smokovec, where they were then handed over to the members of the Slovak National Police.
