Depression Marta is only entering Portugal "now", but there will be "temporary relief" on Sunday

Depression Martha only entered Portugal late this Saturday afternoonsays Ângela Lourenço, meteorologist at IPMA, in an interview with SIC Notícias.

The expert explains, on SIC Notícias, that the depression was in the Atlantic, has been moving towards the Iberian Peninsula and is entering the North region “now”, around 6:30 pm.

The cold frontal surface, associated with storm Marta, “crossed the territory in the early hours of today” and was This – and not exactly the depression – caused the worsening of weather conditions.

“There was perhaps a communication problem here. The depression is now crossing the territory, the cold frontal surface crossed it from the southernmost part in the early hours of today”, he adds.

The biggest concern now is the North and Central coastwith strong precipitation and wind.

The meteorologist rules out that Marta’s depression is identical to Kristin’s:

“These are different situations, different characteristics and structures. We are not expecting recorded gust values like Kristin.”

And what are the predictions for the next few days?

Depression Marta then heads towards Spain, which will be affected in the early hours of the morning.

There will therefore be a “temporary relief” on Sundaywith more dispersed and weak precipitation and sunshine in some places.

“Starting in the afternoon, gradually from the coast towards the interior, we will have a new frontal system that will begin to affect the territory. We may have more gradual rain from the afternoon onwards”, adds Ângela Lourenço.

This precipitation will already be an effect of a “new frontal swell”, which will affect us with a depression that is centered in the Atlantic.

Next week, forecasts point to “severe weather”with persistent and sometimes heavy precipitation on Tuesday and Wednesday. And further north on Thursday.

“The 10th and 11th will be critical, with many hours of rain”, he reinforces.

At the end of the week there will be a “relief” in the South regionwith less intense and persistent rain. But the North and Center regions will continue with “the successive passage of frontal waves”.
