Some of the biggest applause during the parade was for the Ukraine team.
Russian athletes who participated as neutrals due to Olympic sanctions imposed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were not included in the parade.
Hundreds of people protested in Milan on Friday morning against Vance’s visit and the presence of some agents from the US immigration agency, ICE, to help protect the American delegation.
On Friday, Vance also met with the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a conservative close to US President Donald Trump, praised the “shared values” with Italy.
