Czech actress and voice actress, winner of the Czech Lion and two-time winner of the Thalia Award Taťjana Medvecká (72) has Slovak roots from both parents, but was born in Prague. The actress, known from films such as Bathory or Marečka, podejte mi pero!, has already said in the past that the mentality of Czechs and Slovaks is different. In the podcast, she zoomed in on how she meant it.
Czechs and Slovaks formed one nation for many years and remained extremely close even after the division of the state. We are united by a common history, language proximity, and strong personal ties that have lasted to this day.
After the appointment of new governments, presidents and prime ministers are traditionally the first to visit Prague or Bratislava, which only confirms the exceptional relations between the two countries. We are often referred to as brothers who understand each other without words. Nevertheless, it sometimes turns out that we are not exactly the same in some things.
The presenter reminded the actress in the podcast that they still say that Czechs and Slovaks are brothers. According to her, how are we so different? “Maybe it’s a myth too. And unfortunately, even after the revolution, it became clear that the Czech side does not understand the Slovaks very much. Mr. Pithart (former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, editor’s note) writes beautifully about it, including to the address of Václav Havel, who actually did not know Slovakia very well“, she looked back at the past of our nations.
Her daughter also showed her a concrete example. “I feel that Slovakia is a younger, more ferocious nation. My daughter, when she was studying at Erasmus (an international exchange program for students that allows them to study or complete an internship abroad, most often at universities within Europe, note editor) in Aix-en-Provence (a city in France, note editor), she said: Mom, the Slovak women were absolutely the most motivated, simply the most pumped up. And also of their friends from Slovakia, unfortunately, not a single one is left there” said Medvecká.
