Grandma’s iconic recipe book, found in the nooks of the closet, is a treasure that many would not despise. Delicious, simple, creative and made from products that were easily available – these are the recipes from the Polish People’s Republic. Many of them are ones we enjoy preparing to this day. We present you the recipe for iconic chocolate blockwhich was a desired substitute for chocolate just a few decades ago.
The availability of products was limited – chocolate was very difficult to obtain, and even if it was possible to buy it, it was far from the chocolate we know today. However, these times boast more than one interesting recipe – this is how the chocolate block was created, although it did not contain chocolate as such.
Just a few decades ago, it was prepared from powdered milk, margarine, cocoa and wafers. Such a cake was often sold in pieces – the store-bought ones were not very popular, although they had their supporters and opponents. Fortunately, grandmothers tweaked the recipe, making many children and adults love this dessert. Housewives added various additions to it, including: nuts, raisins or coconut flakes; cocoa was also spared.
Currently, this dessert is prepared mainly with butter – margarine has a moderately pleasant smell, so it is not necessarily used for cakes that are not baked. In addition, we have much more additives to choose from, such as pistachios or the above-mentioned chocolate, with which you can additionally pour the cake.

- 225 g of butter,
- 300 g of additions (these can be raisins, nuts, almonds, pistachios, cranberries or crushed cookies),

Add the powdered milk a spoonful at a time to the cooled mixture, stirring constantly. Also add a few drops of the selected flavor to the mass. Then put any additives in it and mix – you can use your favorite nuts or crushed cookies; it is important that there are 300 grams of them.
Pour the resulting mass into a baking tray lined with baking paper. You can decorate the top with almond flakes. Place the cake tin in the fridge overnight. After this time, the chocolate block from grandma’s recipe is ready – cut it into strips (approx. 2 cm) and serve, e.g. You can also add whipped cream, powdered sugar and some fruit to the portion. The cake can be prepared this way stored in the refrigerator for a week.
