Leader Takaičiová triumphs: the LDP won a significant majority in the Japanese elections

Prime Minister Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party is headed for a sovereign majority in the lower house of the Japanese parliament. The exit poll shows the possibility of winning a two-thirds majority for the first time since 2017.

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Prime Minister Sanae Takaičiová will have a significant majority in the new composition of the lower house of parliament. This follows from an exit poll published by NHK television after Sunday’s early elections, reports TASR according to Reuters and AFP agencies.

  • The LDP won a significant majority in the lower house of parliament.
  • The party could have between 274 and 328 seats out of 465.
  • With a coalition partner, it can achieve a two-thirds majority.
  • Such a majority will allow the veto of the upper chamber to be overridden.
  • Prime Minister Takaičiová used her popularity to announce elections.

According to the survey, the LDP could win between 274 and 328 seats in the 465-member House of Representatives. Until now, the party had only 198 deputies in the lower house.

A two-thirds majority of the government

Together with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, according to the exit poll, the LDP-led government could have a two-thirds majority of 310 deputies. This would allow her to break through possible sentences of the laws from the upper chamber, where the coalition usually does not have the power.

A win of 310 or more seats would give the ruling bloc a two-thirds majority for the first time since the 2017 election under the late ex-prime minister Šinz Aby.

Popularity of Prime Minister Takaičiová

Reuters reminds that Japan’s first prime minister, Takaichi, called early elections at the end of January in an attempt to capitalize on the high popularity of her person among Japanese voters.
