He tries not to panic with the president’s statement that the vice president has a role to play in the São Paulo election, which would indicate a desire for him to run for state government or the Senate.
“People got confused. In the last election it was like that too, he asked Alckmin to dedicate himself more to São Paulo, because he was governor four times, he has a very strong mass of voters. What I understood is that he, as vice president, would have a role here in the state”, says the party leader in the Chamber, Jonas Donizette (SP).
Another member of the party leadership says that the statement is “strictly correct”, since Alckmin has votes in a crucial state for the presidential succession. But that doesn’t mean he would stop serving as vice president.
This leader states that it is not realistic to imagine that other parties, such as MDB and PSD, which are split into pro and anti-Lula wings, could nominate the vice president. On the other hand, the PSB is a historic ally of the PT members and both parties have several arrangements already formed in the states for the election.
The PSB hopes that questions about the vice-president vacancy will be resolved in a planned conversation between Lula and the mayor of Recife, who also presides over the party. They should initially meet next Tuesday (10).
