Portuguese presidential candidate António José Seguro celebrates after advancing to the second round of the presidential elections at his campaign headquarters, in Caldas da Rainha
António José Seguro is the new President of the Republic. According to the first television projections, the candidate supported by the PS won the second round of the Presidential Elections, with a result that should be around 70% of the votes.
The Catholic University’s projection for RTP gives Seguro between 68% e 73%. In this projection, André Ventura collects between 27% and 32%.
According to Intercampus’ projection for CM/CMTV and SIC, the candidate supported by the PS should obtain between 67% e 71,4% of votes. The president of Chega, in turn, obtained between 28.6% and 33%.
Pitagorica’s projection for TVI/CNN gives António José Seguro among 67,0% e 71,4%. André Ventura collects, in this projection, between 28,6% e 33,0%.
When the provisional results in 2,082 of the 3,259 parishes and 58 of 107 consulates, António José Seguro is the candidate with the most votes with 62.97% (783,010 votes), ahead of André Ventura with 37.03% (460,374).
The first round of the presidential elections took place on January 18 and was the most competitive, with 11 candidates, with 52.26% of the nearly 11 million registered voters voting.
Television projections for the abstention in the election this Sunday indicate that it should be located between 37.5% and 48%. In 2016, in Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s first election, the abstention rate was 51.34%.
The abstention rate in 2021 presidential election it stood at 60.76%, the highest ever, with Covid-19 and the automatic registration of Portuguese abroad contributing to this increase.
More than 11 million voters were called today to choose the new President of the Republic, in a vote that pits António José Seguro against André Ventura, the two most voted on January 18th. In the first vote, Insurance obtained 31.1% of the votes and Ventura, 23.52%.
Insurance may be available during this election surpass the highest vote ever in presidential elections, obtained by Mário Soares, re-elected in 1991 with 70.45% of votes. Ramalho Eanes obtained a vote of 61.59% in 1976, and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was re-elected in 2021 with 60.7%.

António José Seguro’s ‘headquarters’ received the first results projections of the second round of the presidential elections with celebration and songs of victory.
Minutes before 8:00 pm, the scheduled time for the projections of the results of the second round of the presidential elections to be announced on television, dozens of supporters of António José Seguro’s candidacy gathered near the four televisions installed at the entrance to the Caldas da Rainha Cultural and Congress Center.
The last 20 seconds until the right time were counted in unisonwith the projections being received with much celebration and victory songs, including one of the most sung during the electoral campaign: “Portugal present, Seguro a Presidente”.
At the door of the candidate’s house, a few meters from where the ‘general headquarters’ is located and where a group of journalists are gathered, at the time of the screenings and in the minutes that followed, several cars honking celebrating the victory projections of the former PS leader.
