Tragedy in the Alps: A massive avalanche claimed the lives of two skiers

An avalanche in the French Alps killed two skiers off a groomed slope. According to local rescue services, they died when an avalanche started on Saturday afternoon near Saint-Veran, the highest village in the French Alps. TASR writes about it according to the AFP agency.

Winter mountain tourism and ski mountaineering are very popular in the area, but at the same time there is also risky activity off the slopes. An “extensive” avalanche started down the northern side of the Tête de Longet mountain peak.

Two skiers died (one born in 1997 and the other in 1991) while skiing off-piste without supervisionthe prosecutor at the court in Gap, Marion Lozac’hmeurová, told AFP. Two others from the group were uninjuredshe added. An autopsy was ordered as part of the investigation into the cause of death. Avalanches have already claimed the lives of more than 20 skiers in the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps this winter season.
