“Voting is overcoming calamity.” Marcelo's last appeal

The President of the Republic made his last presidential message on the eve of the second round of the presidential elections this Sunday (not in all parishes in the country), contested between António José Seguro and André Ventura.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa called for participation in the second round of the presidential elections, arguing that voting means overcoming the calamity and also affirming democracy.

Voting tomorrow is called overcoming the calamity and remake our future. Voting tomorrow is called freedom. Voting tomorrow is called democracy”, declared Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a communication to the country, broadcast live from the Palácio de Belém, in Lisbon.

In your last presidential message on the eve of elections – which he chose not to hold in the first round of these presidential elections, three weeks ago –, the head of state addressed in particular the “hundreds of thousands” of Portuguese people affected by the recent storms, those who lost family members or their homes, those who “felt isolated, anguished or desperate”.

Not everyone votes this Sunday

More than 36 thousand voters, Alcácer do Sal, Arruda dos Vinhos, Golegã, Salvaterra de Magos and others parishes in the municipalities of Leiria, Santarém and Cartaxo They will only return next Sunday (February 15th), as it is in a state of calamity, due to the consequences of bad weather.

The City Council of Marinha Grande changed one of the three voting locations for Sunday’s presidential elections in the parish of Vieira de Leiria, replacing the Instruction and Recreation Library at the PSP Summer Camp.

As polling stations opened at 8am in mainland Portugal and Madeira for the second round of the presidential elections, ending at 7pm. In the Azores, polling stations open and close one hour later than Lisbon time, due to the time difference.

More than 11 million voters are called to choose the new President of the Republic, in a vote that opposes António José Seguro to André Venturathe two most voted on January 18th.

In the first vote, Seguro obtained 31.1% of the votes and Ventura, 23.52%, according to the general results tabulation notice.

António José Seguro, supported by the PS since the first round and by parties on the left afterwards, will appear first on the ballot, followed by André Ventura, president of Chega.

The electoral universe is identical to that of the January 18 elections: 11,039,672 voters, 174,662 more than in the 2021 presidential elections.
