The latest update to the Global Tipping Points Report was published at the end of last year. This is a comprehensive scientific report prepared by over 200 researchers (including from the University of Exeter and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research) and was first published in 2023. He analyzes the risks of tipping points in the Earth system, at which a system – for example the Greenland ice sheet or the tropical coral reefs – loses its stable state and tips over into a new, changed state. The crucial thing is that once such a process has started, it can hardly be stopped – even if the original trigger later disappears. However, there are such tipping points not only in the geophysical area, but also in the social area, namely ones that can accelerate the development towards sustainability and climate neutrality.
