Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s coalition is expected to win at least two-thirds of the seats in the lower house of parliament after today’s general election, according to projections by public broadcaster NHK.

Takaichi’s conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its ally the Innovation Party (populist center-right) are expected to win at least 310 of the 465 seats, according to NHK.

If the projections are confirmed, it would be the best result since 2017 for the LDP, which was then headed by Shinzo Abe, Takaichi’s political mentor, who was assassinated in 2022.

The LDP is expected to win more than 300 seats on its own, out of the 465 in the lower house, compared to the 198 it had so far.

After her party’s sweeping victory, Prime Minister Takaichi said the potential of the alliance between the United States and her country was “limitless.”

“I look forward to moving into the White House in the spring and continuing our joint work to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance,” he wrote to X.

Underlining that the partnership between the two countries is “based on a deep trust and a close and stable cooperation”, the Prime Minister added that “the potential of our alliance is UNLIMITED”.
