Not being able to speak is one of the most terrible things people can suffer from, says Renate Welsh. The now 88-year-old children’s book author knows this from her own experience: a stroke temporarily robbed her of speech in 2021 and plunged her into a fate that she herself describes as the “loss of losses”.
