INSS CPMI rekindles offensive against Lula’s entourage after defeat in votes

President of the commission, Carlos Viana says he will reinstate requests to summon Lulinha, Frei Chico and names linked to the PT, despite resistance from the government base

The INSS CPMI is expected to remain one of the main focuses of political tension in Brasília in the coming weeks, even after successive defeats by the opposition in internal votes.

Senator Carlos Viana, who chairs the commission, decided to keep the strategy of confrontation with the Planalto Palace alive and stated that he will return to the agenda requests already rejected by the collegiate.

Among the central targets is Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, son of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The attempt to summon him was blocked in early December, when the government base achieved a majority to reject the request.

The offensive takes place in parallel with Federal Police investigations into suspected billion-dollar embezzlement of social security benefits. According to information released by CNN BrazilLulinha’s name appears in quotes collected during the investigation, although there has been no formal accusation of a crime so far.

President Lula has already publicly stated that, if his son has committed irregularities, he will have to answer in court.

The CPMI president also targets other characters linked to the presidential environment. One of them is Frei Chico, Lula’s brother and leader of the National Union of Retirees, Pensioners and Elderly People.
