United States military forces approached the Aquila II oil tanker in the Indian Ocean without incident after pursuing it from the Caribbean, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said on Monday (9) in a post on X.
The action included the exercise of visitation rights, maritime interdiction and boarding of the vessel, the Pentagon chief added.
According to Hegseth, “he fled, and we followed him” – that is, the ship tried to escape and was followed by American forces, but there was no confrontation during the operation.

The approach comes amid what Washington calls a blockade of sanctioned ships traveling to or from Venezuela, part of a broader campaign against Nicolás Maduro’s regime and the US government-sanctioned oil trade. The publication does not say in which country the Aquila II is registered.
