André Ventura lost with 33.2% of the votes. In his defeat speech, he made a point of highlighting that he surpassed the percentage obtained by the AD in the last legislative elections and considers that this demonstrates that Chega is on the path to governing the country.
“It’s the first time it’s happened in history. Chega surpasses AD and that’s a big, big victory”, said André Ventura on election night and that’s all he wanted to get to. There were weeks and weeks of campaigning, with several trips around the country, just to be able to end the night saying:
“We had 300,000 more votes than in the last legislative elections in Portugal. We surpassed the AD’s 31% in the last elections with 33.2%. We lead the right in Portugal. It is fair to say that the Portuguese put us on the path to governing this country”, said André Ventura.
André Ventura just doesn’t say that the 33% he had in the Presidential 279 thousand votes are worth less than AD’s 31% in Legislatures.
“No, no, sorry, 500,000 or 600,000 fewer people voted. Chega had 33% and AD had 31%,” he added.
They continue to be less 279 thousand votes of the political leader who entered the second round, wanting to gather all the space on the right and who, for now, remains far from achieving this.
“We didn’t win, but we are on the path to victory. Today’s result gave us a huge stimulus to continue working on this project that is to transform Portugal”, said the Chega leader.
The first clash with Luís Montenegro is scheduled for this Wednesdayin the fortnightly debate, in what will be André Ventura’s return to the opposition chair.
