An image of supposed news is circulating on social media stating that the bank may ask you for justification if you make five withdrawals in a month. A SIC Check.
How many withdrawals do you make monthly? Have an idea? And if you were told that if you exceeded a certain number of ATM withdrawals, you would be contacted by the bank asking for clarification. Did you believe it?
This is exactly the allegation made on X (formerly Twitter) using an image of apparent news. The criticism is, from the outset, made in a tone of irony: “scoundrels, making bank withdrawals from their own account”.
But will it happen?
The image shared in this tweet them origin na website called “inconveniente.pt” and the supposed news is signed by “Miguel Branco”someone who says “calways curious about the world of savings and rare coins” and that “pShare your discoveries with those who want to better understand these topics, without technical language or unnecessary complications”.
SIC contacted the Sociedade Interbancária de Serviços (SIBS), a Portuguese company owned by the main banks operating in Portugal, which clarifies that “has not established any mechanism that requests clarifications based solely on the number of operations carried out (whether lifts or other movements).”
“The use of the network ATM is free and determined by the needs of each userwithin the established daily safety limits”, informs the company.
When can the bank ask for clarification? SIBS explains that “has implemented fraud prevention mechanisms” that serve to “identify anomalous deviations” of customers “compared to their usual history”. The objective, they emphasize, is “ensure consumer safety and the detection of possible misuse”.
SIC verifies that it is…
Os banks will not ask you for clarification if you make five or even more withdrawals per month. Such a scenario will only occur in a situation of anomalous transactions compared to usual behavior thate usually havein this case being a “fraud prevention” mechanism”.
