Ipea: reduction in working hours will have a redistributive effect – 02/09/2026 – Panel

A study that will be released this Tuesday (10) by Ipea (Institute for Applied Economic Research) states that the eventual reduction in working hours will have a major income redistribution effect in the country.

The main reason is the fact that the 44-hour day, . The finding is based on data from Rais (Annual Social Information List) from 2023.

The Ipea technical note shows that longer working hours predominate in low-paying occupations with higher turnover, while 40-hour contracts are associated with higher average wages.

The debate about reducing working hours gained strength recently with the discussion about ending the 6×1 scale, one of the Lula government’s priorities for this year.
