A 42-year-old woman died after falling approximately 600 meters into a volcano crater during a birthday hike. The tragedy occurred when she lost her balance while taking photos and fell into the depths.
Ingrid Daniela Vera Figueroa climbed the Llaima volcano with a group of friends, which is among the largest and most active volcanoes in Chile. The mother of two children published a post on social networks just a few hours before her death, reports .
“It’s three in the morning and we’re packing our backpacks to climb Llaima,” wrote Ingrid. “I hope God will be with me on this wonderful day as I celebrate 42 years. I am extremely happy,” she added. “Yes, I have a little uncertainty about what will happen,” she wrote at the end. The terrible accident happened on May 17. According to available information, Ingrid was taking photos while descending the volcano.
Allegedly, at that moment she let go of her climbing harness and lost her balance in the strong wind. Subsequently, she slipped and died after falling from a great height into the volcano. Rescue work was significantly complicated by unfavorable weather. Even the helicopter could not get close to the woman due to strong gusts of wind. Ingrid’s death was confirmed that evening, but her body was not recovered until the next day due to the brutal conditions.
The director of the National Forestry Corporation, Héctor Tillería, said the tourist group did not register with the park administration before climbing. He appealed to all climbers to follow the registration rules for their own safety. A spokesperson for the school, where Ingrid served as a board member, described her as a responsible, loving and dedicated mother. The local community expressed their condolences to her husband, two children, family and friends. The tragic death of the young woman is already being investigated by the police.
