Many people mainly deal with tomatoes with the right fertilizer or enough sun. At the same time, one of the most important things is hidden at the very bottom of the flower pot. Gardeners point out that a simple hole at the bottom of the container can significantly affect the number of fruits and the health of the entire plant.
Anyone who has ever grown tomatoes in a pot knows this. The plant grows beautifully at first, but then it starts to wither, turn yellow or just . In this case, it is often not a matter of bad seedlings or a lack of sun. The problem is usually somewhere else, namely at the bottom of the flowerpot.

Experienced growers warn that is absolutely essential for tomatoes. And just a simple hole in the bottom of the pot can decide whether the plants will be full of fruit or they will stop thriving.
Without drainage, the roots begin to rot
Tomatoes need a lot of water, but they do not tolerate long-term waterlogged soil. If the water has nowhere to drain, it starts to stick to the roots and the plant gradually weakens.
That is why quality flower pots have drainage holes in the bottom part. Thanks to them, excess water will drain away and the roots can breathe.
A drainage layer also helps
“Sometimes the hole alone is not enough. I recommend adding a layer of expanded clay, pebbles or fragments from the flowerpot to the bottom of the flowerpot,” advises gardener Jaroslava Rubešková.
Drainage helps prevent the roots from standing directly in water. According to experts, it is the combination of drainage and drain hole that significantly improves the condition of plants in containers.
Tomatoes need a lot of space
Another common mistake is a flower pot that is too small. Tomatoes have a strong root system and use up water and nutrients quickly in a small container.
Deeper containers with sufficient volume and several drainage holes are ideal.
Correct drainage is even more important in flower pots on the balcony than in the garden, because the soil dries out and gets overwatered much faster.
A simple detail that makes the difference
Many people focus mainly on fertilizers or the right variety, but forget the very foundation, which is healthy roots.
And just a simple hole at the bottom of the pot can decide whether the plant will produce a few tomatoes or be covered in fruit all summer.
