President of PT avoids criticizing TSE decision on research: “It must have foundations”

The president of the PT, Edinho Silva, said this Tuesday (9) that the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Kassio Nunes Marques, “must have grounds” to suspend an AtlasIntel/Bloomberg electoral survey from May this year. The monocratic decision is on the TSE’s agenda this Tuesday, 9th, for the other ministers to endorse or overturn it.

Edinho avoided expressly defending the decision, but said that Nunes Marques “must have grounds” for the decision. He stated that the PT respects the decision that the president of the TSE “will conduct the electoral process in the best possible way”.

“If he made this decision, he must have grounds. We respect it. The Judiciary’s decision cannot be debated, it is respected. We have a lot of respect for Minister Nunes Marques. We are sure that he will conduct the electoral process in the best way possible. We will always comply with what the TSE decides and what the president of the TSE expresses in his decisions”, he declared.

Experts interviewed by Estadão criticized Nunes Marques’ decision and spoke of censorship.

Edinho gave an interview to journalists before a seminar promoted by the PT on a proposal to reform the Judiciary. The PT president said that the event is an opportunity to “start the debate” on reform proposals based on “the interests of society” and “strengthening the Judiciary”.

Edinho declared that a proposal to reform the Judiciary will not necessarily be included in President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) government program, but will be defended by the PT.

The former mayor of Araraquara stated that Lula’s government program “is bigger than the PT’s”, but that the matter could be included in the document “if there is consensus among other parties”.

Edinho stated that he does not see defining mandates for ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) as a “priority”, but rather expanding the representation and powers of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), for example.

Regional alliances prioritizing Lula

At the same event, Edinho Silva stated that the regional alliances made by the party will have as a priority the re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). It means, in practice, that the interests of the president’s re-election may override those of the regional directorates.

Edinho said that “the priority is the re-election of President Lula” and that “it is from this priority that we will build alliances in the States”.

The statement came when Edinho was talking about negotiations in Goiás and Minas Gerais. In both states, the regional directorates approved resolutions to nominate their own candidates.

“The PT in Minas approved a resolution that it would be its own candidacy. It is correct, the party has to defend its leaders. But we have spoken with the allied parties as well. We have to think that alliances are built in the States, but we also have the national alliance. We have to understand that the priority is the re-election of President Lula. And based on this priority, we will build alliances in the States”, stated the PT president.

“The PT in Goiás approved a pre-candidacy position yesterday. The party needs to have names to debate with its allies. But, as I said, alliances in the states will be built based on the need for us to expand alliances for the re-election of President Lula”, he added.

In the case of Minas, Edinho said that the party is “accelerating” conversations with allied politicians. Among them, the former mayor of Belo Horizonte Alexandre Kalil (PDT), members of the PSB and former councilor Gabriel Azevedo (MDB).
