The project for the implementation of the high-speed line in Porto and Gaia confirms several demolitions of buildings in Campanhã for the expansion of the station, but the housing impact in Gaia is reduced in relation to the previous project.

According to the execution project referring to the Espinho, Porto and Gaia section of the Porto-Lisbon high-speed line, in public consultation until the 29th, it is possible to see that the forecast demolitions in Porto, including 44 houses, seven economic activities (including the gas station on Avenida Gustave Eiffel) and three buildings of other categories. At stake are, for example, several dozen houses on Rua da China, in Campanhã, and also on the streets of Presa da Agra and Freixo, as already reported by Lusa in October last year.

Already in Gaia, where at least 64 direct allocations of houses were planned, these now amount to 43but the number of companies increases, going from 22 to 37 between the October 2025 project, failed by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), and the current one.

To reduce the demolition of housing in Gaia, the non-construction of a station in Vilar do Paraísoas several houses would have to be demolished in the Guardal de Cima area for its construction, which will no longer happen, but on the other hand, the demolitions of several companies in the industrial zone of São Caetano (15) continue, as well as nine in the industrial zone of Terços.

In terms of housing, the most affected area will be Santo Ovídio, with 14 houses and six companies affected, in addition to a building of another unidentified type. There will also be allocation of 24 houses and six companies spread across the rest of the municipality.

Already in Espinho, in the parish of Anta, there will be eight houses and three economic activities in questionas well as a house already in the territory of Santa Maria da Feira.

The proposal to insert the high-speed line in Porto confirms the existence of a single bridge over the Douro RiverGaia station in Santo Ovídio and a sheltered overpass in Campanhã, consulted Lusa on Friday.

The proposal will be subject to public consultation until June 29th.

In Gaia, the high-speed line will be underground for most of its route, with the construction of the so-called Vila Nova de Gaia tunnel (3.4 kilometers), Negrelos tunnels 1 (995 meters) and 2 (190 meters) planned, on the border with Espinho the Casaldeita tunnel (1.9 kilometers) and, further south, between Espinho and Feira, the tunnel under the A41 motorway (65 meters) and Cassufas (830 meters).

In addition to the bridge over the Douro River, there are plans for a bridge over the Senhora de Lamas stream (566 meters), in Santa Maria da Feira, a bridge over the Silvalde stream (614 meters), in Espinho, and, in Gaia, a viaduct over the A29 (92 meters) and the Pedreira das Lajes viaduct (439 meters).

Work on the first section (Porto-Oiã, Oliveira do Bairro, Aveiro), part of the first public-private partnership of the Porto-Lisbon high-speed line, should begin this year and is scheduled for completion in 2030.

The high-speed Porto-Lisbon connection will place the two cities within 1:15 of each other, and will have possible stops in Gaia, Aveiro, Coimbra and Leiria.

It should be completely ready in 2032, as well as Porto-Vigo, with stations at Porto airport, Braga, Ponte de Lima and Valença.
