President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran shot down an American Apache helicopter that was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz overnight and promised to retaliate, but gave no further details.
“I have just been informed by our Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our sophisticated Apache helicopters while patrolling the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
“However, the United States must necessarily respond to this attack,” he added.
A US Army helicopter crashed in recent hours near the Strait of Hormuz, although the pilots were rescued safe and sound, as Trump confirmed earlier.
“The pilots are fine,” the president told the press. “There are no injuries,” he added, without giving further details about the incident, after The New York Times reported the incident and reported that the rescue mission in the area had been successful.
Until that moment, the reasons that caused the crash of the aircraft, an Apache, were unknown, although the United States Army opened an investigation into the case.
