Panel: More than 6,000 schools do not have drinking water in the country – 04/05/2025 – Panel

A panel formed with data donated that 6,658 of the 181,065 basic education schools in the country, or 3.67%, do not have. The problem affects 744 thousand children and adolescents.

The data are contained in a project developed by a group formed by CNMP (National Council of the Public Prosecution Service), Atricon (Association of Members of the Courts of Auditors of Brazil) and IRB (Rui Barbosa Institute).

Between June 2 and 6, 2025, the Courts of Auditors and CNMP will make technical visits in schools without access to drinking water, aiming to study and suggest solutions to the issue of sanitation. The initiative was named after learning.

“The absence of sanitation and drinking water compromises not only health, but the educational process itself. This joint action is an important step in building a safer, inclusive and welcoming school environment,” says Councilor Cezar Miola, coordinator of Atricic’s Education Commission.

Created by the Public Prosecution Service of Alagoas, the headquarters of Learning signed an agreement in 2023 with CNMP, Atricon and IRB. The project, aligned with UN Agenda 2030, seeks to universalize sanitation in schools through educational, formative and inspection actions.
