From Nurse to heiress: took care of only 24 days and 'deflected' inheritance of almost 1 million euros

A new judicial case related to a controversial inheritance gains attention. Lionel Cox, a 92 -year -old man, passed away leaving a heritage of over 930,000 euros to the nurse who accompanied him for less than a month. The decision surprised family members and led to the opening of a lawsuit to nullify the will.

According to, Cox had no children or family nearby and his health was already fragile when he was admitted to July 3, 2015 at the Cambridge House residence in Collingwood, Australia. Nurse Abha Anuradha Kumar, then homemade, quickly realized that the patient had no testament made.

Drafted testament a few days after admission

In less than a week, and according to the same source, Kumar tried to get a will model and had convinced two colleagues to sign as witnesses. In the document, the entire inheritance of Cox passed to the hands of the nurse, who also appointed himself as a testamentary executor. “It was written under the most suspicious circumstances imaginable,” said Geoffrey’s lawyer, cousin of the deceased.

Heritage evaluated in more than 930 thousand euros

Among the goods left by the elderly in the inheritance was a housing, whose Kumar key tried to locate shortly after learning of death. On the day of death, caused by pneumonia, the nurse was not in service, but contacted an employee to ensure access to the house before the body removal.

Death certificate was treated by

It was also Kumar who presented himself as an informant in the death certificate and who led the procedures to validate the will. The way the whole process took place raised doubts with the authorities and was eventually investigated, according to the Spanish portal.

Court acknowledged the family complaint of the family

The case was only publicly disclosed in 2021, when the State Trustees formally requested the cancellation of the will. The court gave reason to the family and forced Kumar to return about 510 thousand euros still existing from the Lionel Cox estate.

According to the process documents, Kumar spent about 140,000 euros on lawyers, trying to justify the legality of the will and avoid returning all the assets obtained in the inheritance.

Professional order withdrew the right to exercise

At the same time, Australia’s Nursing and Obstetric Council decided in 2019 to revoke Kumar’s professional license. According to the same source, and according to the body, the nurse “was excessively implicated in the personal affairs of Lord Cox”, violating the ethical duties of the profession.

Judicial decision intends to serve as a notice

Cox’s family lawyer, James Dimond, considered that the sentence represents an important precedent. “It is a reminder that the law can, and should, act in these cases,” he said, quoted by the The Sydney Morning Herald.

We recommend:

Forged or pressured signatures are increasingly common

Although cases like this are not frequent, Dimond warned that there are similar situations in which elderly people, without family support, are persuaded to sign documents that do not truly reflect their will.

The final period of life of the elderly, especially in homes or continued care units, involves delicate decisions. Experts advocate greater vigilance on those who assume legal responsibilities in these contexts.

Regulation of wills needs reinforcement

Jurists stress that inheritance legislation needs clearer rules to avoid abuse, namely when beneficiaries have power or proximity to the testers.

Clarity in instructions can avoid future conflicts

The recommendation of the professionals is that any will be made with full awareness and, preferably, in the presence of a notary or independent lawyer, avoiding later family conflicts.

Although the sentence does not fully recover the diverted heritage, it is seen as an important step in combating opportunistic practices that take advantage of the fragility of the elderly at the end of life.
