Headset? Police? INEM? You can now vote for the 2024 Word of the Year

Porto Editora presents the 10 candidates, who represent themes related to journalism, wars, fires, migration or security that marked the country’s agenda this year.

Porto Editora has already released the ten finalist words for the 2024 Word of the Year election, an initiative that reflects the most striking themes and events in Portugal and allows the public to vote for the word that best symbolizes the year that is ending.

There are 10 candidates this year:

Auricular — “The use of headphones by journalists debates about transparency in the media”.

Conflicts — “The escalation of armed conflicts reflects geopolitical tensions and causes humanitarian crises.”

fireworks — “Violent fires claimed lives, homes and forests in different regions of the country.”

Immigration — “The number of foreigners living in Portugal is increasing and generates debates about reception policies”.

Inclusion — “The implementation of inclusive policies in education and the labor market reflects the commitment to ensuring a more fair and equitable society.”

INEM — “INEM faces significant challenges in responding to medical emergencies throughout the year”.

Young — “The government supports young people in terms of taxation, housing, mobility and education”.

Freedom — “These were the initiatives that marked the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April Revolution”.

Police — “Police officers have better working conditions in various protest actions”.

Transport — “Transport policies have focused on promoting sustainable mobility and improving infrastructure.”

Voting is open during the month of December at the election official. The most voted word will be announced in the first few days of 2025.
