Portugal will finally take the step of recognizing Palestine as an independent state. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this afternoon in a statement that the official recognition will be held this Sunday, before the UN Assembly that will discuss the Palestinian cause.
Paulo Rangel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, already advanced Monday that the Portuguese government would take the step by not finding obstacles to support Palestinian demand. In recent months, Rangel has maintained contacts with all parliamentary forces to know his opinion.
The Portuguese determination has influenced the passage taken by the French president, Emanuel Macron, to defend the right of the Palestinians to have a state, which later seconded other countries such as the United Kingdom or Canada.
At a conference in New York on Monday, France confirmed that ten countries were preparing to recognize the Palestinian State at the high -level conference that will be held next Monday.
In addition to France, they will give the political support to the Palestinian state in the appointment at the UN Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Malta, United Kingdom and San Marino. Portugal will take the step a day before.
