Brazilian Fernando Sabag Montiel was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Argentine courts for .
In addition to him, Brenda Uliarte, Montiel’s then girlfriend, received an 8-year prison sentence for participating in the crime. Both were charged with attempted aggravated murder. A third defendant, Gabriel Carrizo, was acquitted.
On the night of the attack, Montiel and Brenda were caught on security cameras selling cotton candy during a demonstration in support of the former president, in front of her house, in Buenos Aires.

Amid the crowd, Montiel approached Cristina Kirchner and fired twice, positioning the gun about 15 centimeters from the Peronist leader’s face. The bullets, however, did not come out of the revolver. The scenes were recorded by the press and activists, having repercussions worldwide.
During the trial, Montiel declared that he had no regrets and classified the attack as an “act of justice”. In his final speech, he accused the process of being “armed”.
Born in Brazil in 1987, son of an Argentine mother, Sabag Montiel has lived in Argentina since 1993. Before the attack, he had already been arrested for possession of child sexual exploitation material.
