One of Gisèle Pelicot's rapists appealed the decision. He will spend another year in prison

Gisele Pelicot (C), French victim of gang rape, accompanied by her son Florian Pelicot (L) and her lawyer Stephane Babonneau (R), upon arrival at the Gard criminal court, in Nimes, France.

Husamettin Dogan continues to say that he was “deceived” by Dominique Pelicot, the victim’s ex-husband, and that he thought he had obtained the woman’s consent. Court extended the initial sentence.

The Court of Appeal of Nimes, in the south of France, aggravated the conviction of Husamettin Dogan to 10 years in prisonone year more than in the first instance, for having raped Gisèle Pelicot in 2019, after she had done so against her will.

“The court and the jury sentence Husamettin Dogan to 10 years in prison” with socio-judicial monitoring with “a 5-year precautionary measure”, announced the president of the judicial instance, Christian Pasta.

The 44-year-old man, father and worker, was the only one who appealed of the sentence in which more than 50 men were also charged with sexual assault and rape under chemical restraint.

He says he was deceived by Gisèle’s ex-husband

Dogan’s sentence was handed down after nearly three hours of deliberation and four days of hearings in this new trial, emblematic of the themes of sexual violence, consent and the administration of chemicals. Dogan alleged during the first three days of the hearing that was “tricked” by Dominique Pelicotthe victim’s ex-husband who served 20 years in prison and who Dogan described as a “manipulator”.

According to his version, he thought that Pelicot had obtained the woman’s consent, which was already denied in the first trial, which ended in December 2024.

“It is clear that Giséle Pelicot did not consent to this”, said prosecutor Dominique Sié this Thursday, pointing out Dogan as fully responsible for a crime of aggravated rape committed in June 2019 in the city of Mazan, in the south of France.

The prosecutor recalled that the woman appears motionless in the videos and that both the experts who attended the trial and other defendants ruled out that there was any consent, reported the television station Franceinfo.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office requested, in this appeal, a sentence of 13 years in prison, the same as in the first trial, in which 51 men were convicted of sexual assault and rape of Gisèle Pelicot, without her knowledge, with the main culprit being her ex-husband, who admitted the guilt in court, as well as blaming the other 50 men accused of rape.

In this trial, the Public Prosecutor’s Office pointed out the zero evolution of Husamettin Dogan, who continues to deny the rape despite 14 videos of around half an hour in total that prove the crime.

“The only victim in this room is me.”

Gisèle Pelicot also rebuked Dogan on Wednesday for portraying herself as a “victim” of Dominique Pelicot.

“Victim of what? The only victim in this room is me. Take responsibility for your actions and stop hiding behind your cowardice,” he said.

Although a night of rape is now being tried, this case is just part of what the victim suffered for almost a decade. Dominique Pelicot administered high doses of sleeping pills and anxiolytics to his wife, diluted in food, causing her to fall into a deep sleep shortly after — on the verge of a coma.according to experts. It was then that he and the other men took the opportunity to commit sexual crimes.

All acts were recorded in hundreds of photos and videos which Dominique Pelicot did, with the knowledge of the other abusers, who sometimes raised a thumbs up in front of the camera, while the woman was completely inert.
