Peruvian Congress approves dismissal of President Dina Boluarte

The Peruvian Congress approved, by 124 votes to 0the dismissal of President Dina Boluarte this Friday (10).

The vote was called early in the morning this Friday, Brasília time, late Thursday night (9), local time.

Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum had voted an hour earlier to impeach her for “moral incapacity” and called on her to defend herself before Congress.

Boluarte did not attend the Congress session that removed her from office. Her lawyer, Juan Carlos Portugal, stated in a message on the X network that they decided not to attend because they understood that the Legislature violated due legal process by not giving the president enough time to present her defense.

Boluarte, 63, faced strong popular rejection and accusations of corruption, as well as criticism for the violent repression of protests during his government.

The dismissal comes after weeks of political pressure and the presentation of four motions that alleged the president’s “permanent moral incapacity.”

With Boluarte’s departure, the position must be assumed, on an interim basis, by the head of Congress, José Jeri.

Dina Boluarte took power in December 2022, after the fall of Pedro Castillo, and becomes another name in the series of presidents ousted in Peru — the sixth since 2018.
