In the early hours of this Friday (10) President Dina Boluarte, due to “permanent moral incapacity” to deal with the worsening crisis of violence and corruption in the country.
The decision, taken unanimously (118 votes in favor), ends a government of almost two years marked by protests, judicial investigations and a record drop in popularity.
With Boluarte’s departure, the head of Congress, José Jerí, assumed the Presidency by constitutional succession. He promised to “declare war on crime” and lead a government of national reconciliation until the next elections, scheduled for April 2026.

Boluarte had refused to attend the voting session, classifying the process as “unconstitutional”. His defense claimed that the dismissal violated due process, but Congress decided to proceed with the vote after his absence.
The former president leaves power with 93% popular disapproval, according to a survey by Datum Internacional, and under several investigations for corruption and illicit enrichment. His removal consolidates a recent history of political instability: Peru has had six presidents in just seven years, all of whom have been removed, resigned or imprisoned.
Crisis of violence
The dismissal occurred amid an escalation of urban violence and extortion committed by gangs, which have become one of the country’s main problems.

The political trigger was the shooting attack against the popular cumbia band Agua Marina, during a show in Lima, on Wednesday (9).
At least four musicians were shot, and authorities attribute the attack to extortion groups that operate at popular shows and events.
The episode caused a strong national commotion and increased pressure on the government, accused of ineffectiveness and negligence in combating organized crime.
The rise and fall

promised to fight corruption and restore political stability, but faced fierce opposition in Congress and violent protests in the streets.
Boluarte even announced early elections for 2026 and promised neutrality in the process, but failed to rebuild public trust.

New government
The new president, José Jerí, takes on the challenge of containing the advance of the gangs and restoring the credibility of the institutions. In his inauguration speech, he promised to strengthen security forces and “declare war on the gangs” that control part of the country.
Despite the firm speech, Peru remains trapped in a cycle of instability and party fragmentation, with Congress dominated by conservative and Fujimorist groups, which supported the dismissal.
The fall of Dina Boluarte deepened the institutional crisis and reinforced the pattern of political instability that transformed the country into one of the most volatile in Latin America.
