Lack of chips could stop automakers in a matter of weeks, warns Anfavea

Anfavea, an entity that represents automakers, says it is “attentive and concerned” about the risk of a lack of semiconductors for car production, which could affect factories in a matter of weeks. The entity notes that the new crisis refers to the scenario experienced during the pandemic, when automakers had to stop production due to a lack of electronic components.

“Anfavea is attentive and concerned about the risk of vehicle production being halted in the country due to the critical shortage of semiconductors, which could affect manufacturing operations in a matter of weeks”, says the association in a note.

According to the entity, the new chip crisis is due to geopolitical disputes intensified this month, after the Dutch government took control of the manufacturer Nexperia, a semiconductor giant subsidiary of a Chinese group. In response, China imposed restrictions on the export of electronic components, which is already affecting production at some automotive factories in Europe and risks stopping automakers in Brazil.

A modern vehicle, explains Anfavea, uses, on average, between 1,000 and 3,000 chips. Without these components, automakers are unable to keep the production line running, points out the entity, which says it has already alerted the federal government about the need for quick and decisive measures to avoid semiconductor shortages.

“With 1.3 million jobs at stake across the entire automotive chain, it is essential to seek a solution at an already challenging time, marked by high interest rates and a drop in demand. The urgency is evident, and mobilization is necessary to avoid a collapse in the industry”, emphasizes the president of Anfavea, Igor Calvet.
