The largest dissident group of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) released this Saturday (25) a direct warning to the United States, stating that it will respond with weapons if the North American country carries out ground operations in Colombian territory.
The statement came after President Donald Trump announced that he authorized military action against drug cartels in Latin America.
“We are used to fighting and combating anyone. We have always been staunch opponents of the American empire”, stated members of the Central General Staff (EMC), a faction that broke the 2016 peace agreement and today operates in cocaine-producing areas in the country.

“We will not allow military interventions and violations of Colombian sovereignty”, they added, in a statement sent to journalists.

The White House’s announcement of a troop deployment in the Caribbean generated immediate reactions in Bogotá and Caracas. Colombian President Gustavo Petro classified any US land action as an “invasion” and a “violation of national sovereignty”.
“Any land aggression is an invasion and a violation of sovereignty,” Petro said at a press conference, when asked about Washington’s plans.

EMC rebels control strategic cocaine production and export areas, especially in the Catatumbo region, close to the border with Venezuela. The group is led by Iván Mordisco, considered the most wanted criminal in the country, and whom Petro himself recently compared to Pablo Escobar.
