The morning after the election results were announced, many shops in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé remained closed. Public buildings, local television images showed, were guarded by heavily armed security forces after police shot dead four people in the cities of Douala and Garoua. There were the expected nationwide protests after the pro-government Constitutional Council declared 92-year-old Paul Biya the winner – with 53.7 percent.
