After reaching Jamaica, the hurricane is now heading towards Cuba and the Bahamaswhere local authorities are already warning the population about the impacts of the storm.

Hurricane Melissa, which recently passed through Jamaica, lost strength and was reclassified to category four, but left signs of destruction throughout the island.

The storm left more than half a million people without electricity and caused damage to several infrastructuresincluding hospitals. In addition, it caused landslides and falling trees, with wind gusts exceeding 300 kilometers per hour.

SIC spoke to Pedro Almeida Dias, a Portuguese resident in Jamaica, who described the scene of destruction left by the storm.

“These are quite deep marks,” he said, noting that the impact of the hurricane will be felt for a long time.

During the interview, Pedro highlighted the vulnerability of the island, whose economy depends heavily on tourism.

“Jamaica is highly dependent on tourism and this hurricane will certainly leave strong marks because the destruction is so great in all coastal areas,” he said.
