According to Andrei Rodrigues, the representative of the Regional Superintendency of Rio said that the Federal Police could not collaborate as they did not carry out visible work in Rio’s communities
The director general of the Federal Police (PF), stated this Wednesday (29), that the Regional Superintendence of the Federal Police was not questioned about the participation in the local police operation that left at least 119 dead on Tuesday, 28. However, according to Andrei, the corporation was not aware that the action would be launched by now. “We were not notified that it would be launched at this time. There was previous contact between Military Police intelligence personnel and our unit in Rio to see if there was any possibility of us acting at any point in this context. Based on the analysis of the operational planning, our team understood that it was not a reasonable operation for us to participate in”, said Andrei Rodrigues in a statement to the press, after participating in an emergency meeting called by the president (PT), at Palácio da Alvorada.
According to Andrei, the representative of the Regional Superintendence of Rio said that the Federal Police could not collaborate as they did not carry out visible work in Rio’s communities and that they would continue carrying out intelligence actions. “The Rio de Janeiro team understood, based on the general analysis of the planning, that this was not the way the Federal Police operates. The colleague from RJ informed his operational contact that the Federal Police continues its investigative work, as a judicial police, carrying out its intelligence work”, said Andrei.
The Minister of Justice and Public Security, told the press that the PF was notified of “some details” of the operation at the local level, but the government still does not have all the data on the mega-operation carried out in the Penha and Alemão complexes. According to the minister, if the operation required the participation of the federal government, President Lula should have been notified. Lewandowski also declared that the negotiations could not be limited to the “second or third level”, but rather with conversations between the governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro, and the Presidency of the Republic.
“Communication between governors has to take place at the level of higher-ranking authorities. An operation of this size cannot be agreed upon at a second or third level. If it were an operation that required interference from the federal government, the President of the Republic should have been notified, or the vice-president who was responsible for the Presidency, or the minister of Justice and Public Security or the director-general of the Federal Police”, he stated.
As of 1pm, the Rio government had recorded 119 deaths in the operation, including 4 police officers. According to the State Public Defender’s Office, the death toll is 132 people.
