One dead and at least one injured after an explosion at the Viator maneuvering field in Almería | Spain

One soldier has died and at least another has been injured this Friday after the deflagration of an explosive device at the ‘Álvarez de Sotomayor’ maneuvering field, in Viator (Almería), as sources close to the case have told EFE and EL PAÍS has confirmed.

He specified that around 11:00 a.m. the first call alerting of a possible explosion in these facilities attached to the ‘Álvarez de Sotomayor’ base, headquarters of the Legion, was received on the single emergency telephone number.

Sources tell El PAÍS that the identity of those affected cannot yet be confirmed, since they are still communicating it to the families, but they assure that there is only one deceased and “at least” one injured. This person has already been transferred to a hospital in the capital of Almeria awaiting a complete examination. The same sources rule out that the device that exploded was a grenade, as was initially published: “We are still analyzing what happened and how,” they explain.

The Spanish Troop and Sailor Association (ATME) points out, however, that there are “several” injured. “There is still nothing clear about whether [el accidente] “It has been due to an explosive material or some type of element that has had a deflagration within the unit itself or in one of the buildings,” ATME noted in a statement.
