The EU should reduce its emissions by 90 percent by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. This is the EU Commission’s proposal to pave the way to climate neutrality. A proposal that was also approved by Austria’s Environment Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP): In July, he called the goal “ambitious but feasible” in a press release. In his view, the EU proposal is “an important milestone towards climate neutrality and a future-fit business location”. In a directive sent to the Permanent Representation in Brussels in September, the government once again clearly committed to the 90 percent target. The coalition partners also stepped up. A few days later, SPÖ climate spokeswoman Julia Herr announced: The entire federal government is clearly committed to the goal.
