Mamdani, who leads voting intention polls, is a democratic socialist politician and won the Democratic Party primary, beating former governor Andrew Cuomo.

Despite Trump’s accusations, Mamdani rejects the communist label and defines himself as a “Scandinavian”-style politician, focusing on social justice and dignity for all New Yorkers.

The president declared his preference for Cuomo, despite not being his fan, stating that he would always choose a “bad Democrat” over a “communist”.

Cuomo, in turn, is trying to position himself as the most experienced candidate to deal with the Trump administration, highlighting his performance during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The New York mayoral election is seen as a clash between political continuity and the renewal represented by Mamdani, who promises a more progressive administration.

The city, the largest market in the US, receives billions in federal resources annually, and Trump’s stance could influence the future of these transfers.
